Getting to Know Plan B Skateboards
How Was Plan B Skateboards Created?
Founded in 1991 by Mike Ternasky and Tony Magnusson, Plan B started under World Industries, similar to companies like Blind and enjoi.
At the time of Plan B’s formation, the skateboarding industry consisted of business owners who weren’t directly involved with skating. These companies solely focused on manufacturing products for the sake of profit, with little involvement from the skating community.
Dissatisfied with the skating industry, Ternasky set out to initiate a rebirth of the industry. Not only did he create a super team of professional riders for Plan B, but he also gave riders more freedom that other companies did not provide.
This promise for freedom attracted a lot of skaters who left their companies to join Plan B. For instance, both Ternasky and Magnusson had connections to H-Street and eventually brought other riders such as Matt Hensley, Mike Carroll, and Sal Barbier.
The departure of some of its biggest skateboards would leave a heavy impact on H-Street.
Similarly, Way left his place at Powell-Peralta team, one of the biggest companies of the time, to join Plan B. He left Powell as his company did not provide him with the support and freedom he required.
Behind Plan B’s Influence
As mentioned above, Ternasky had gathered under Plan B a super team of pro skaters, which can be a contributing factor towards the company’s popularity at the time.
While one can’t say that Plan B was the reason behind the downfall of the vert, we can certainly say with surety that the company helped escalate the fall. The influence of the company’s pro team is enough explanation.
Only Way and Colin McKay were vert skaters. The majority of the team were all street skaters. This helped increase the popularity of street style skating.
Another influential factor was Plan B’s skateboarding film, ‘Questionable.’ While it wasn’t the first skateboarding feature, it definitely was an influential one. With the super team featured in the film, it captured the attention of the skating community.
Among other things, the film included two newly invented tricks by Mullen, the kickflip underflip and the casper slide. The most interesting part was that Mullen wasn’t even a street-skateboarder, but eventually, he transitioned into the style through his interactions with Ternasky and Plan B. This transition was apparent in the film.
Things Go Downhill for Plan B
In 1994, Ternasky passed away after getting into a car accident. The ownership of the company was transferred to Johnson and other skaters like Way and McKay. Ternasky’s death had a massive impact on both the company and its team.
Plan B held on till 1997, but eventually, they had to close down the company, and the team had to disband. Ternasky’s presence held Plan B together. Later, McKay mentioned how, at the time, it was tough for them to manage the company while skating at the same time.
In 1997, Plan B put out its fourth film, The Revolution, the last film the company created during its first phase.
Plan B Returns
In 2005, Mckay and Way relaunched Plan B with financial backing from Syndrome Distribution. While the company isn’t as influential as it was back in the day, it is still well-known and respected in the skating industry.
Plan B’s current team of pros includes:
- Chris Joslin
- Felipe Gustavo
- Aurelien Giraud
- Tommy Fynn
- Ryan Sheckler
- Pat Duffy
- PJ Ladd
These names speak for themselves; Plan B’s current pro team is one reason behind its popularity.
What Does Plan B Make?
So, what exactly does Plan B manufacture?

Quality of Plan B Products
Are Plan B skateboards good?
If you’re concerned about decks splitting in two, you need not worry about Plan B. Plan B decks are quite durable; they’re better than most other skateboard brands. Quite often, beginners who get complete boards from Plan B, keep their decks and simply upgrade the other components.
While Plan B’s trucks and bearings aren’t the best of the best, they’re still quite decent. Plan B trucks and bearings are a good option if you’re a newbie and don’t want to spend too much money on skateboard components.
What Makes Plan B Special?
The best part about Plan B Skateboards is that they’re continually evolving. They have a team of specialists who regularly take feedback from skateboards and improve their products’ quality.
Moreover, before launching any new products, Plan B ensures it has been tried and tested. Therefore, you know the chances of feeling disappointed are slim.
The best part is that you can choose to have your board delivered to you assembled or unassembled. Keep in mind that if you don’t know much about skateboarding and don’t have anyone to assist you, it’s best to get the board pre-assembled.
Are Plan B Skateboards Expensive?
At the end of the day, it all comes down to cost.
Are Plan B Skateboards expensive?
Not really. Most Plan B decks cost around $50, which is the market value for a good quality deck. If you’re a beginner with a budget but don’t want to compromise on quality, we’d suggest getting Plan B’s complete skateboards.
Getting a complete board will be a lot cheaper than assembling your own board. You can start off on a complete board, and eventually, as your skill level goes up, you can upgrade the components.
